Cathryn was born on July 28th, 1923 to Alfred and Gina (Brudelie) Ahlness, and raised in Hanska, a little village south of New Ulm, with three brothers, Kenelm (Lois), Philip (Eleanor) and Orlando, and three sisters, Thelma (Jesse Armstrong), Mary Jane (Bob Midbruget) and Dorothy (Don Fenske). Her siblings all preceded Cathryn in passing.
Cathryn met her husband Lorrain “Pat” Patterson at Springfield Ballroom in Springfield, MN. They were married at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church on June 19,1948. They resided in Sleepy Eye, where ‘Pat’ was the owner of Patterson Jewelry. While in Sleepy Eye, they were blessed with four sons, Jay, Douglas, Kevin, and Brian. The family moved to New Ulm in 1968 where ‘Pat’ estalished a new Patterson Jewelry and all four boys graduated from New Ulm High School.
Grandpa Lorrain “Pat” and Grandma Cathryn were blessed with 10 beautiful grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Jay (Jeanne) had two boys; Jared (Britta) and Joel (Sarah). Douglas (Gloria) had four children; Stephen (Abbie), Erin, Rachel (Abbott) Lang, and Kristin (Adam) Nilson. Kevin (Judy) had two children; Ben (Claire) and Abby (Brady) Olson. Brian (Renee) had two children; Kelly (Tim) Olson and Jesse (Kaylee). The ten grandchildren also blessed Grandma and Grandpa with 11 great-grandchildren.
Cathryn was a very devoted Christian woman and mother. She attended her church regularly. She loved her children, grand-children, and her great-grandchildren immensely. She loved her entire extended family as well.
We firmly believe that this strong woman is at the side of Jesus. Her example as mother, grandmother and wife was exemplary. We are all proud of her and her influence on our lives. Especially the chocolate chip cookies.
