NEW ULM — Bonita “Bonnie” Smasal, 72, of New Ulm died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.

A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home SOUTH CHAPEL in New Ulm with Pastor Barb Korte officiaiting. Inurnment will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home SOUTH CHAPEL in New Ulm.

Bonnie is survived by her daughter, Amy Drexler of Hanska; sisters, Julie (Jerry) Sandau of New Ulm, Christine (Chuck) Honzay of Bird Island; brothers, Frank (Dianne) Smasal of Madison Lake, Mark (Trish) Smasal of St. George, Utah, Kevin Smasal of Mankato, Neal (Linda) Smasal of New Ulm; grandchildren, Joshua Drexler, Jordan Drexler and Jenna Krueger; and her great grandchildren, Quinn, Hudson, Marlee, Kylee, Hunter, Leigha and Easton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her son Shane Tauer.

Bonita Catherine Smasal was born Feb. 4, 1947 in New Ulm to Clifford and Florella (Bushard) Smasal. She was a 1965 graduate of Cathedral High School and also earned her Associates Degree from South Central College. Bonnie was employed at the Mankato Post Office until her retirement in 2014. She was very spiritual and enjoyed yoga, bowling, gardening and she loved her cats.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to the Alzheimer’s Association and Parkinson’s Foundation.
