NEW ULM — John “Johnny” Arsers, 93 of New Ulm died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Aug. 4.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm with Pastor Gerhardt Miller officiating. Military honors will be provided at the funeral home by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard. A private burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery Soldier’s Rest Section.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm.

Johnny is survived by his sister, Clarice Arsers, of New Ulm; and his brother Samuel Arsers also of New Ulm.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Irene; sister, Lorraine Kohlmeyer; and his brothers, William and Kenneth Arsers.

John Allen Arser was born April 24, 1926 in Spring Valley to Clarence and Bessie (Passmore) Arsers. He attended school in Chatfield, where his father was the instrumental music director and band conductor. At an early age Johnny was very proficient on the clarinet, earning top awards at District and State music contests. Johnny was from a musical family as his brothers Bill, Kenny and Sam were all members of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington DC.

After graduation in 1944 Johnny joined the Merchant Marine and served on troop ships crossing the North Atlantic to Europe. After the war, he returned home to Minnesota and played with the Lynn Kerns Band in Fairmont and then with the Guy De Leo Band in New Ulm. He later played with the Six Fat Dutchmen, Babe Wagner and Elmer Scheid bands and spent a year touring the U.S. with the Henry Bussie Orchestra.

Johnny was united in marriage to Irene “Pinky” Radke on Nov. 18, 1946 in New Ulm. He was employed as a sales agent with the TWA Airlines from 1960-1980 in Las Vegas, NV and Los Angeles, CA, winning many awards for his excellent performance.

Johnny also played with the Original German Band, the Schell’s Hobo Band and in recent years teamed up with Donnie Klossner to entertain residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in New Ulm and other area locations.

Johnny was a member of American Legion Post 132 and VFW post 1648 in New Ulm.
