NEW ULM — Gladys Portner, 82 of New Ulm died Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 19th at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Father Gerald Meidl celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm.

The Christian Mother’s Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Cathedral.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Donald; daughter, Kathy (Randy) Hasse of Waverly; sons, Kevin (Linda) Portner of Courtland, Doug (Becky) Portner of New Ulm; grandchildren, Gina (Joel) Dehmer, Scott (Kristyn) Hasse, Tiffany Portner, Amber (Brandon Anderson) Portner, Preston (Amber) Portner and Nick Portner; great grandchildren, Kaylee and Briella Dehmer, Olive, Stella and Lucas Hasse and Hudson Portner. Brother, Melvin (Mary) Eckstein of Fairfax; sister-in-law, JoAnn Eckstein of Hector; and by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Anthony Eckstein and James Eckstein; and a nephew David Eckstein.

Gladys Rose Eckstein was born September 7, 1936 in Sleepy Eye to Anton and Laura (Schiller) Eckstein. She was united in marriage to Donald Portner on September 16, 1954 in New Ulm. After marriage Gladys was employed at BF Goodrich until her retirement. She was active in volunteering at New Ulm Medical Center Oncology Department, New Ulm Chamber of Commerce, funeral lunches at Cathedral. Gladys was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Christian Mother’s Society, Catholic Order of Foresters and Glockenspiel Club where she served on their Board for 4 years.
