Sylvester C. Spaeth

SLEEPY EYE — Sylvester C. Spaeth, age 92, of Sleepy Eye, MN died peacefully on August 5, 2018, at his home in rural Sleepy Eye.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye and will continue on Thursday from 9:30 until 11 am at the church in the North entry.

There will be a Parish Prayer Service at 4pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass will be held at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 11:00 am.

The clergy will be Msgr. John Richter

Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.

Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, MN.

Sylvester was born December 20, 1925 on the farm south of Morgan, MN to Wolfgang and Bertha (Braun) Spaeth. He attended country school and St. Michael’s Catholic School through eighth grade. Sylvester remained on the farm and worked with his parents. On November 26, 1946 he married Delores Haala at St. Mary’s Catholic Church In Sleepy Eye. They moved to a farm south of Morgan for nine years and in 1955 they moved to their present farm northwest of Sleepy Eye where Sylvester farmed until his death. Sylvester was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic United Financial, AMPI board of directors, and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He received the New Ulm Diocese Bishop’s Medal of Service in 1990 and Spirit of St Mary’s Award in 2007 recognizing Christian values, dedication, service and love for God’s mission.

He is survived by his wife, Delores, children, Leon (Sherri) Spaeth and their children Ryan (Faina) Spaeth and Kimberly (Erik) Kennedy; Lonnie (Vicky) Spaeth and their children Christina (Brian) Harrer, Julie (Terry) Smith and John (Chelsea) Spaeth; Chuck (Kathy) Spaeth and their children Laura (David) Fischer, Rachel (Joe) Snyder, Amanda (Craig) Murphy and Mary (Erik) Olson; Patricia (Patrick) Berkner and their children Katherine (Forest) Letellier, Eric (Lexi) Berkner, Ann Marie Berkner (Greg Gonzales), Bethany Berkner and Sarah Berkner; Dale (Debra) Spaeth and their children Andrew Spaeth, Nickolas Spaeth, Benjamin Spaeth, Jack Spaeth and Jason Spaeth, Sahnje McGonigle, Seth McGonigle, Sean McGonigle; and 37 great-grandchildren! Brothers, Alois (Margaret) Spaeth, Wilfred “Bud” (Theresa) Spaeth; sister Lucille (Armin) Losleben, brother-in-law Vernard (Donna) Haala; sister-in-law Gladys Reinarts. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Marjorie Spaeth; brother and sisters Felix Spaeth, Antoinette (Harold) Schugel, Irene (Herbert) Fischer, Monica (Erwin) Suess, Loretta (Arthur) Simon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Elmer (Mabel) Haala, Walter (Mildred) Haala, Wilbert (Angie) Haala, Orlene (Harold) Kral, Lester Reinarts.
