NEW ULM — Gerald “Jerry” Leon Werner, after several arduous health battles over recent years, which he fought through valiantly, succumbed Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, to complications incurred from a stroke. Private services were held in New Ulm.

Jerry was born Feb. 7, 1938, in New Ulm to Arthur and Vera Werner. He spent his childhood in Milford Township, Brown County and graduated from New Ulm High School in 1956.

He served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed primarily in The Canal Zone during the 1960s. He provided fire safety equipment to Fairmont and the surrounding area for over 20 years before relocating to Huntsville, Ala. where he eventually retired from The Huntsville Times. After retirement he relocated to Kansas City, Kan., where he resided until his passing.

Jerry was fun-loving, honorable, faithful and generous of heart. He was courageous in the face of injustice and always encouraged his daughters to “Never let anyone push you around,” a lesson they value every day. His absence will be felt every day by those who loved him.

Jerry is survived by his daughters and their families: Joy of Kansas City, Mo., and Nicole of Ashland, Ala.; brothers, Kenneth of Green Bay, Wis., Robert of Litchfield, Minn., and Thomas of East Troy, Wis. He was preceded in death by his brother, David. Memorials may be sent to Puppy Love Therapy Dogs, Inc., 57240 Juniper Rd., Good Thunder, MN 56037.
