LAFAYETTE — Leon A. Berdan, age 70, of Lafayette, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2017 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette, with Father Germain Rademacher celebrating the Mass. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm, and will continue from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday.

Leon is survived by his wife, Shirley of Lafayette; his children, Missy (Casey) Dezelske of Cohasset, Melodee Beck of New Ulm, Mindy (Mark) Cotter of Prior Lake, Tony (Jill M.) Berdan of New Ulm, and Andy (Lindsay) Berdan of Winthrop; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arnold and Randal Berdan; and granddaughter Addison Berdan.

Leon Anthony Berdan was born on April 15, 1947 in New Ulm to Victor and Eleanor (Preisinger) Berdan. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1965. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968. On Nov. 5, 1971 he married Shirley Freitag in New Ulm. He worked as a farmer on the family farm near Lafayette and at Lafayette Lumber. He was a member of Lafayette Legion Post 300, D.A.V. and C.A.V.E. coffee club. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, playing cards and above all else spending time with his family.
