January 03, 2016
Steven Bruce Jacoby died on January 3, 2016, in Boynton Beach, Florida. After years of struggle, Steven lost his battle with mental illness.
Steve was born to Jerry Jacoby and Judith Case in Oslo, Norway, June 28,1971. He was raised on the Jacoby family farm in Springfield, Minn., and attended St. Raphael’s Catholic School, and Springfield Public School, graduating in 1989. After graduation, he served in the United States Air Force in the first Gulf War, Desert Storm. After his tour of duty, Steve suffered from physical ailments and deteriorated mental health.
Steve worked at several jobs after he was honorably discharged from the Air Force. He started his own company in Prescott, Arizona, and was named Arizona Young Businessman of the year in 2003. His last employment was at the VA Medical Center in Prescott.
In the summer of 2012, Steve walked from Arizona to Washington D.C. to shed light on the problems within the VA. He chronicled his walk (AZ2DC) and was interviewed along the way by different news organizations. Steve was joined by his father in southern Virginia on July 4th, where Steve was a featured speaker at the Independence Day celebration. Steve hoped to meet with the head of the VA when he reached the capitol, but was refused. His walk, and the support he received along the way, is a source of pride and one of the last best memories of Steve.
Steve is survived by his parents, Judith and Bob Case of Dewey, Arizona and Jerry and Mary Jacoby of Walker, Minn.; sisters, Michelle Schwartz of Hamilton, Virginia, Stacie Boggs of Englewood, Colorado; brothers, Brian Markwood of Wellsvide, Penn. and Andrew Jacoby of New Ulm. Steve is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Adolphus and Bertha Jacoby and Robert and Edith Bauer, and an uncle, Jan Legaard.
Although no immediate formal service is planned, his family requests that friends and family share their memories, thoughts, prayers, and photos of Steve at memorialwebsites.legacy.com/stevenjacoby. Memorial gifts can be sent to Steve’s last residence, an assisted living facility, where he was treated with kindness and respect: Rustic Retreat, 1120 North Federal Highway, Boynton Beach, Florida 33435.
Our family will also dedicate this coming 4th of July, 2016, to Steve’s memory. On that day, while gathered with family and friends, we ask that you take a moment to remember Steve in your own way. We encourage you to post a picture of your gathering on this site. Thank you for your continued love and support.
