Marcus ‘Mark’ Retzlaff

NEW ULM – Marcus “Mark” Retzlaff, 85, of New Ulm died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor David Bendix officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, SOUTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Mark is survived by his wife, Betty Retzlaff of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Jody Retzlaff of New Ulm, Dave and Mary Retzlaff of Prior Lake, John Retzlaff of New Ulm and his significant other, Synova Nelson and her children, Riley, Reid, Ryker; grandchildren, Brynne, Carly, Mallory, Brett, Justin, Nathan; sisters and brother-in-law, Carol and Jim Swenson of Miltona, Lucille Busse of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marion Retzlaff.

Marcus Waldemar Retzlaff was born on Aug. 27, 1928 in New Ulm to Waldemar and Hilda (Becker) Retzlaff. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter with a B.A. Degree in Business. On March 7, 1953 he was united in marriage to Betty Kuelbs at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He was owner and manager of Retzlaff’s Hardware in New Ulm. Mark enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, target shooting, smoking cigars, and visiting with people in his store. He was on the board of directors for Citizens Bank Minnesota, Our Own Hardware, New Ulm Telecom, and WELS Mission. Mark was also a commissioner of New Ulm Public Utilities. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, Ducks Unlimited, and the Izaak Walton League.
