New Ulm Police

• Responded to a Wal-Mart theft report at 4:50 p.m. Friday. A suspect fled in a vehicle heading towards Sleepy Eye on Highway 14. Wal-Mart employees believe a woman with the man is responsible for more than $52,000 in stolen Wal-Mart items across the country. The man and woman were not located and their license plate could not be seen on surveillance photos. A report was done for documentation.

• A 30-year-old New Ulm woman told police at 8:07 p.m. Friday she received threatening text messages from her 33-year-old ex-husband of Vernon Center. Police asked for copies of the texts. The woman was advised how to obtain an harassment restraining order. The male suspect admitted to sending some of the messages. A report went to Brown County Probation.

• Stopped a vehicle for a stop sign violation at Center and German St. at 1:40 p.m. Saturday. Impairment signs were detected from the driver. He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. The man became uncooperative. A report went to the New Ulm City Attorney’s Office and Brown County Probation for consideration of fourth-degree DWI, controlled substance possession and forbidden contraband.

• Responded to a theft report at Running’s at 6:10 p.m. Sunday. A store employee said a woman set off the theft detector while exiting the store and $411.77 worth of merchandise was reported in the purse of a 41-year-old Mountain Lake woman. A 37-year-old Jackson man with the woman was uncooperative, giving police a false name and birth date. When his identify was made known, it was learned he had multiple warrants from multiple counties. He was arrested and transported to the Brown County Jail, then cited for giving a peace officer a false name and date of birth. The woman was cited for theft.

• Responded to Menard’s for a trespass complaint at 7:02 p.m. Sunday. Police learned a 64-year-old Winthrop man was in the store who was recently issued a trespass notice. When confronted by police, he gave a false name and false date of birth. He continued to be uncooperative, grabbing a pipe wrench from a store shelf before he was placed on handcuffs and escorted out of the store. He was transported to the Brown County Jail for consideration of giving a peace officer a false name and date of birth. It was later learned the trespass warning was not yet received by the suspect. A report went to the Brown County Attorney’s Office.

• A New Ulm Public School Resource Officer talked with a 16-year-old New Ulm student at 9:39 a.m. Monday about THC use in a school lavatory. The student admitted to possession of a THC vape device and was cited. A report was done for documentation.

Minnesota State Patrol

• Received a one-vehicle crash report with non-life threatening injuries at 10:26 a.m. Tuesday on State Highway 5, west of Arlington, Sibley County. Hicham Tazka, 27, Alexandria, Va. Was driving a 2024 Freghtliner eastbound on Highway 5, lost control and jackknifed in the north ditch. Tazka was transported to an Arlington hospital. He wore a seat belt. Arlington Police and Ambulance and the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office responded.

• Received a two-vehicle crash report on State Highway 4, Hector, Renville County on snow and ice at 9:13 p.m. Friday. A 2019 Chevy Equinox driven southbound on Highway 4 by Jay Tyler Anderson, 40, Springfield, collided with a northbound 2025 Hyunadi Santa Fe driven by a 17-year-old female. A seven-year-old Springfield male was transported to an Olivia hospistal with non-life threatening injuries. Hector Police/Fire, Buffalo Lake Police and the Renville County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
