NEW ULM — St. Nicholas Eve was celebrated at the New Ulm Public Library Thursday with stories, singing and a special visit from St. Nicholas and Krampus.
St. Nicholas talked to children, asking them if they’ve been good. If they were and he believed them, he gave them a treat.
Krampus, St. Nicholas’ companion, a half-goat, half-demon monster, punished misbehaving children at Christmastime with a lump of coal.
The library hosts a celebration each year where local children meet St. Nick and Krampus.
Before they arrived, children listened to children’s librarian Katherine Tatnall read Christmas stories. They were given sleigh bells to play along with the reading and Christmas songs Tatnall led.

Children could complete a craft in the library or at home.
Saint Nicholas Day, also called the Feast of Saint Nicholas, is observed on its eve on Dec. 5 and on Dec. 6 in Western Christian countries.
