NYC nurses reach a deal to end a strike at 2 major hospitals while walkout continues at another
NEW YORK (AP) — Nurses and two major hospital systems in New York City have reached a deal to end a nearly monthlong strike over staffing levels, workplace safety and other issues. The tentative agreement announced Monday involves Montefiore and Mount Sinai hospital systems. Nurses remain on strike at New York Presbyterian. The walkout began Jan. 12. The hospitals scrambled to hire legions of temporary nurses to fill in during a demanding flu season. Mount Sinai alone hired 1,400 temporary nurses. The three-year deal, which still needs to be approved by union members, affects roughly 10,500 of the some 15,000 nurses on strike at some of the city’s biggest private, nonprofit hospitals.

US military boards sanctioned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean after pursuit from the Caribbean
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military says it has boarded a sanctioned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean. The Pentagon said Monday that American forces tracked the vessel from the Caribbean Sea. The Pentagon didn’t say whether the ship was connected to Venezuela, which faces oil sanctions and relies on a shadow fleet to smuggle crude. A co-founder of TankerTrackers.com says the ship departed the Venezuelan coast last month after U.S. forces captured then-President Nicolás Maduro. According to data transmitted from the ship Monday, the ship isn’t currently carrying oil. The Panamanian-flagged tanker is under U.S. sanctions related to the shipment of illicit Russian oil.
