Federal ruling blocks tourist tax on ships
HONOLULU (AP) — A federal appeals court is blocking Hawaii from enforcing a climate change tourist tax on cruise ship passengers. The tax was set to begin in 2026. Cruise Lines International Association challenged the law, arguing it violates the Constitution and would increase cruise costs. The levy includes an 11% tax on cruise fares, with counties able to add a 3% surcharge. Hawaii Governor Josh Green signed the law in May to raise funds for climate-related issues.
