Court pauses Calif. climate change law

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A federal appeals court has paused a California law that requires companies that do business in the state and make more than $500 million a year to report how climate change could hurt them financially. It was set to take effect in January. The 9th Circuit left in place a related law that requires businesses operating in the state that make more than $1 billion a year to disclose their carbon emissions. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says the laws violate the companies’ First Amendment rights. But the state denies that and says the laws will increase transparency.
