Arrivals of international students to the US dropped almost a fifth in August, data shows
Federal data shows a significant drop in international student arrivals in the U.S. this August, down 19% compared to last year. The decline coincides with increased scrutiny of foreign students by the Trump administration.
Many students who had plans to study in the U.S. could not enter the country because of difficulty lining up visas. Students from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East faced the largest declines.
Around 1.1 million international students were in the United States last year — a source of key revenue for tuition-driven colleges.
