Trump says he’ll send National Guard to Memphis, escalating his use of troops
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — President Donald Trump says he’ll send the National Guard to Memphis to address crime concerns there with the support of the mayor and the governor. The Republican president said on Fox News Channel on Friday “the mayor is happy” and “the governor is happy” about the pending deployment. The mayor is a Democrat, and the governor is a Republican. Trump says Memphis is “deeply troubled” and he’s “going to fix that.” Trump cited Washington, where he’s sent National Guard and surged federal law enforcement. Trump has openly mused about sending troops to some of the nation’s most Democratic cities — including Chicago and Baltimore — claiming they are needed to crack down on crime.
Colorado funeral director who acknowledged abusing 191 corpses withdraws guilty plea
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado funeral home owner who acknowledged abusing 191 corpses has withdrawn his guilty plea. The move by defendant Jon Hallford during a Friday court hearing comes after a judge rejected a plea agreement in the case. The agreement called for 20 years in prison for Hallford. But family members of those whose bodies were found wanted a longer sentence. For years, Hallford and his wife, Carie, ran a fraudulent scheme from their Return to Nature Funeral Home while maintaining a lavish lifestyle. He’s already been sentenced to federal prison on fraud charges. A trial in the corpse abuse case is set for next February.
Boeing workers reject their latest contract offer, extending strike at three Midwest plants
(AP) — Boeing workers have rejected another contract proposal, extending their nearly six-week strike at three Midwest plants. The union representing 3,200 workers announced the decision on Friday. These workers build fighter jets, weapons systems and the U.S. Navy’s first carrier-based unmanned aircraft. They’ve been on strike since Aug. 4, shortly after they rejected an earlier proposal that included a 20% wage hike over the life of the contract and $5,000 ratification bonuses. The company says no further talks are scheduled and it has a contingency plan to continue supporting its customers during the strike.
Missouri Senate passes plan that could help Republicans win an additional US House seat
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Senate has passed a plan backed by President Donald Trump that could help Republicans win an additional U.S. House seat. The Senate’s vote Friday sends the measure to Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe for his expected signature. But opponents immediately launched a referendum petition that could force a statewide vote on the new map. Missouri is the third state to take up congressional redistricting ahead of the 2026 elections. Republicans in Texas passed a new House map aimed at winning five more seats. Democrats in California countered with their own redistricting plan aimed at picking up five seats, but it still needs voter approval.
