Milwaukee area drying out after weekend rain causes record flooding on multiple rivers
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee area is drying out after weekend rain hits unofficial state records. Unofficially, more than 14 inches fell in less than 24 hours in one spot, causing rivers to flood, washing out vehicles, and cutting power to thousands. As of Monday morning, no fatalities have been reported. Road closures are more isolated, and flood warnings continued in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties. About 2,000 homes remain without power. Forecasters predict more rain Monday night, but not like the weekend deluge. The National Weather Service says four rivers in the Milwaukee area hit record-high levels over the weekend.
Judge: Transcripts of grand jury that indicted Ghislaine Maxwell won’t be unsealed
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in New York says transcripts of the secret grand jury testimony that led to the sex trafficking indictment of Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell should not be released. The judge suggested Monday the Justice Department’s real motive for wanting the transcripts unsealed was to fool the public with an “illusion” of transparency. The Justice Department hasn’t commented. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison term after her conviction on sex trafficking charges for helping procure girls for Epstein to sexually abuse. Maxwell recently was interviewed by the Justice Department and was moved from a prison in Florida to a prison camp in Texas. Epstein died in jail awaiting trial.
Explosions at US Steel plant in Pa. leave 1 dead, 1 missing and multiple injured
CLAIRTON, Pa. (AP) — Explosions at a U.S. Steel plant that shook the ground near Pittsburgh left one dead and sent at least 10 to hospitals with emergency workers still searching the badly charred rubble hours later for a missing worker. An Allegheny County spokesperson says the explosions happened Monday morning at the Clairton Coke Works. The plant is a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and is considered the largest coking operation in North America. The explosions sent black smoke spiralling into the midday sky in the Mon Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel. Officials said a rescue operation was ongoing Monday.
Man fired 180 shots, breaking 150 windows, in CDC attack
NEW YORK (AP) — The man who attacked the CDC headquarters in Atlanta on Friday fired more than 180 shots into the campus and broke about 150 windows, with bullets piercing “blast-resistant” windows and spattering glass shards into numerous rooms, according to information circulated internally at the agency. It may take weeks or even months to replace windows and clean up the damage, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention personnel said. A Georgia man who had blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for making him depressed and suicidal opened fire late Friday, killing a police officer. No one at CDC was injured. The shooter was stopped by CDC security guards before driving to a nearby pharmacy and opening fire late Friday afternoon, a law enforcement official has told the AP.
