Man who opened fire outside a Mich. church had attended services there with his mom

WAYNE, Mich. (AP) — The pastor of a Michigan church where a gunman was struck by a vehicle and fatally shot by security staff says the man had attended services a few times with his mother. Police identified the gunman as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning, who had no prior criminal history. They say people gathered at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne spotted the man driving recklessly Sunday morning. He exited his vehicle armed and wearing a tactical vest. They say he began firing and a parishioner driving a pickup truck hit him before he was shot. Pastor Bobby Kelly says the gunman’s mother was not there on Sunday.

Search continues for 1 still missing after 7 killed when boat capsized on Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — A search continues for one person still missing after seven others were killed when a boat capsized on Lake Tahoe in California during a powerful weekend thunderstorm that whipped up high waves. The Coast Guard says swells of more than 8 feet were recorded around the time the 27-foot gold Chris-Craft vessel flipped over Saturday afternoon. Two people were rescued immediately and taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Six bodies were recovered later Saturday and a seventh was found Sunday evening. Meteorologists say the intensity of the thunderstorm surprised even forecasters, who’d predicted some rain but nothing like the sudden squall that lashed the southern part of the lake.

Man ordered to pay $500K for assaulting police officer who killed himself after Capitol riot

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal jury on Monday awarded $500,000 to the widow and estate of a police officer who killed himself nine days after he helped defend the U.S. Capitol from a mob of rioters, including a man who scuffled with the officer during the attack. The eight-member jury ordered that man, 69-year-old chiropractor David Walls-Kaufman, to pay $380,000 in punitive damages and $60,000 in compensatory damages to Erin Smith for assaulting her husband, Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. They awarded an additional $60,000 to compensate Jeffrey Smith’s estate for his pain and suffering. The judge presiding over the civil trial dismissed Erin Smith’s wrongful-death claim against Walls-Kaufman before jurors began deliberating last week.

GOP tax bill would ease regulations on gun silencers and some rifles and shotguns

WASHINGTON (AP) — The massive tax and spending cuts package that President Donald Trump wants on his desk by July 4 would loosen regulations on gun silencers and certain types of rifles and shotguns. It advances a longtime priority of the gun industry as Republican leaders in the House and Senate try to win enough votes to pass the bill. The House bill would remove silencers from a 1930s law that regulates firearms that are considered the most dangerous, eliminating a $200 tax on the accessories and also removing a layer of background checks.
