Judge blocks Trump’s election executive order

ATLANTA (AP) — The attorneys general for California and New York are praising a federal judge’s decision to block President Donald Trump’s executive order on elections. The judge in Massachusetts on Friday sided with the Democratic state attorneys general, who called the Republican president’s executive order overreach. Trump’s order sought to compel officials to require documentary proof of citizenship for everyone registering to vote for federal elections and accept mailed ballots only if received by Election Day. The attorneys general say Trump’s order was unconstitutional. The White House has defended Trump’s order as “standing up for free, fair and honest elections.” The judge says the Constitution doesn’t grant the president any specific powers over elections.

Military commander says 200 Marines moved into Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — About 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles and will protect federal property and personnel, the commander in charge says. Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51 who is overseeing the 4,700 troops deployed, said Friday that the Marines have finished training on civil disturbance. Sherman said the Marines would begin operations at noon local time in Los Angeles. The Marines will help replace some of the 2,000 National Guard troops that have been on the streets of the city protecting federal property since last week when immigration raids set off protests.

Feds to continue to detain Columbia protester, claiming he lied on his green card application

NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration says it will continue to detain Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil, claiming the legal U.S. resident lied on his green card application. The Friday response comes after Khalil’s lawyers asked a federal judge again to order his release from an immigration lockup. In a letter to U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz in New Jersey, Khalil’s lawyers said he has satisfied all of the court’s requirements to go free and that the government’s lawyers missed a Friday morning deadline to challenge Farbiarz’s order Wednesday to release Khalil. The judge ruled that Khalil couldn’t because he couldn’t continue being held based on the U.S. secretary of state’s determination that he could harm American foreign policy.
