Immigration judge grants bond to Mass. teen arrested on his way to volleyball practice
CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) — An immigration judge has granted bond to a Massachusetts high school student who was arrested on his way to volleyball practice over the weekend. Eighteen-year-old Marcelo Gomes da Silva, who came to the U.S. from Brazil at age 7, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents Saturday. Authorities have said the agents were looking for the Milford High School teen’s father, who owns the car Gomes da Silva was driving at the time and had parked in a friend’s driveway. Authorities said that although they never intended to apprehend him, he was found to be in the U.S. illegally. His lawyer says he’s “as clean as a whistle” and was expected to be released later Thursday on $2,000 bond.
Trump says after Xi call that US and China will resume trade talks
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says his first conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping since returning to the White House had a “very positive conclusion,” announcing the two countries will hold trade talks in hopes of breaking an impasse over tariffs and global supplies of rare earth minerals. The Chinese foreign ministry says Xi asked Trump on Thursday’s call to “remove the negative measures” the U.S. has taken against China. The discussion followed the Republican president suggesting it was tough to reach a deal with Xi. Trade negotiations between the United States and China stalled shortly after a May 12 agreement between both countries to reduce their tariff rates to have talks.
Filings for jobless benefits last week rises to highest level in 8 months
WASHINGTON (AP) — Filings for U.S. unemployment benefits rose to their highest level in eight months last week but remain historically low despite growing uncertainty about how tariffs could impact the broader economy. New applications for jobless benefits rose by 8,000 to 247,000 for the week ending May 31, the Labor Department said Thursday. That’s the most since early October. Analysts had forecast 237,000 new applications. Weekly applications for jobless benefits are considered representative of U.S. layoffs. The four-week average of jobless claims, which evens out some of the week-to-week gyrations during more volatile stretches, rose by 4,500 to 235,000, the most since late October.
Judge: AmeriCorps must restore grant funding and members to states that sued over cuts
(AP) — A federal judge has issued a temporary block on the Trump administration’s cancellation of hundreds of millions of dollars in AmeriCorps grant funding and thousands of service workers in about two dozen states that sued in April. The decision means the federal agency must restore grant funding and corps members in those states. The federal lawsuit was filed by Democratic state officials across the country. It accused President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency of reneging on grants funded through the AmeriCorps State and National program.
