Georgia mayor jailed on felony charges

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The mayor of a small Georgia city and two former election workers have been jailed on felony charges stemming from efforts to stop a local election last fall. Camilla Mayor Kelvin Owens was indicted on charges of election interference and other counts Wednesday. So were the city’s former elections superintendent and her chief deputy. The two election officials quit their jobs the day before Election Day last November and the mayor announced that a special election for city council was canceled. That happened after a judge ordered that votes not be counted for a candidate who was disqualified. Ultimately the elections were held after an hours-long delay. It was not immediately known if Owens or the other defendants had attorneys.
