Rescue crews recover the body of a 10-year-old girl lost in Texas floods

BRENHAM, Texas (AP) — Rescue crews in Texas have found the body of a 10-year-old girl swept away by rapidly rising floodwaters. Forecasters warn that more heavy rains and flooding could be on the way to the Houston area and the state’s coast. Teams of people scoured the city of Brenham, using drones with thermal imaging and dogs to find the girl. The water rescue operation was scaled back overnight when heavy thunderstorms moved through the area, but four swift water rescue teams resumed operations early Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Houston says the next round of severe storms could bring as much as 6 inches of rain Tuesday to parts of southeastern Texas.

Appeals court makes no immediate decision in detention cases of 2 university students

(AP) — A federal appeals court has made no immediate decisions as it considers jurisdictional issues in the cases of a Turkish Tufts University student who’s been detained by immigration authorities for six weeks and a Palestinian student at Columbia University who was recently released from detention. A judicial panel of the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, based in New York, heard motions Tuesday filed by the U.S. Justice Department regarding Rumeysa Ozturk and Mohsen Mahdawi. The department is appealing decisions made by two federal judges in Vermont. It also wants to consolidate the students’ cases.

US trade deficit hits record high as businesses, consumers try to get ahead of Trump tariffs

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. trade deficit soared to a monthly record of $140.5 billion in March, signaling a rush for imports from businesses and consumers alike ahead of President Donald Trump’s latest — and most sweeping — tariffs taking effect. According to federal data released on Tuesday, U.S. exports for goods and services totaled about $278.5 billion in March, while imports climbed to nearly $419 billion. That’s up $0.5 billion and $17.8 billion, respectively, from February trade. The latest jump arrived as trade wars deepened abroad. The recent surge in imports arrived as companies across the country tried to bring in foreign goods before more duties kicked in.
