10,000 pages of records about Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 assassination are released

(AP) — About 10,000 pages of records related to the 1968 assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were released Friday, including a handwritten note by the gunman that said the Democrat “must be disposed of.” The release continued the disclosure of national secrets ordered by President Donald Trump. Kennedy was fatally shot on June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles moments after giving a speech celebrating his victory in California’s Democratic presidential primary. His assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, was convicted of first-degree murder and is serving life in prison. The files included pictures of handwritten notes by Sirhan.

Judge won’t take further steps to enforce his order in AP case against Trump administration

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on has denied a request by The Associated Press that he take further steps to enforce his order last week that the White House stop blocking AP’s access to cover events because the outlet won’t rename the Gulf of Mexico in its reports. U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden handed the AP a victory last week in its efforts to end the ban. He says it’s too soon to say the President Trump is violating his order — as the AP suggests. For two months, the White House has essentially banned AP reporters and photographers from their traditional spot covering events in smaller spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One. The AP says it’s a violation of its free-speech rights.

Judge pauses Trump administration’s plans for mass layoffs at CFPB

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s attempt to fire nearly everyone at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been paused by a federal judge, who says she’s “deeply concerned” about the plan. Friday’s decision leaves in limbo a bureau created after the Great Recession to safeguard against fraud, abuse and deceptive practices. Trump administration officials argue the bureau oversteps its authority. The Republican administration Thursday moved to fire 1,500 people, leaving 200. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson says she’s worried the layoffs would violate her earlier order stopping the administration from shutting the bureau. The judge is considering a lawsuit filed by an employee union that wants to preserve the bureau. There’s a hearing April 28.

US citizen was held for pickup by ICE even after proving he was born in the country

MIAMI (AP) — A U.S. citizen was arrested in Florida for allegedly being in the country illegally and held for pickup by immigration authorities even after his mother showed a judge her son’s birth certificate and the judge dismissed charges. The man was released Thursday after his case received widespread coverage. A spokesperson at the Florida Immigrant Coalition says 20-year-old Juan Carlos Lopez Gomez was in a car that was stopped just past the Georgia border by the Florida Highway Patrol on Wednesday. Gomez and others in the car were arrested under a new Florida law that makes it a crime for people who are in the country illegally to enter the state.
