Judge’s ruling protects migrant shelter on US-Mexico border
McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A judge has blasted efforts by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to shutter one of the oldest and largest migrant shelters on the U.S.-Mexico border in a scathing ruling. Judge Francisco X. Dominguez in El Paso on Tuesday accused the Republican of “outrageous” conduct over his claims that the shelter encourages migrants to enter the country illegally. Dominguez ruled that Paxton’s attempts to enforce a subpoena for records of migrants who have been served at Annunciation House in the last few years violated the shelter’s constitutional rights. His ruling prevents Paxton from seeking the records.
Biden proposes new rule to protect 36 million workers from extreme heat
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has proposed a new rule to address excessive heat in the workplace. The Democrat warns as tens of millions of people in the U.S. are under heat advisories that high temperatures are the country’s leading weather-related killer. If finalized, the measure unveiled Tuesday by the Democratic president would protect an estimated 36 million U.S. workers from injuries related to heat exposure on the job — establishing the first major federal safety standard of its kind. Those affected by excessive heat in the workplace include farmworkers, delivery and construction workers, landscapers, gardeners and workers in warehouses, factories and kitchens. Biden says more people die from extreme heat than from floods, hurricanes and tornadoes combined.
Tesla sales fall for second straight quarter despite price cuts
DETROIT (AP) — Tesla’s global sales fell for the second straight quarter despite price cuts and low-interest financing offers, another sign of weakening demand for the company’s products and electric vehicles overall. The Austin, Texas, company said Tuesday that it sold 443,956 vehicles from April through June, down 4.8% from 466,140 sold the same period a year ago. But the sales were better than the 436,000 that analysts had expected. Demand for EVs worldwide is slowing, but still growing for most automakers. Tesla, with an aging model lineup and relatively high average selling prices, has struggled more than other manufacturers but retained its title of being the electric vehicle sales leader in the U.S. and across the world.
Stripper sues Florida over new age restrictions for workers at adult entertainment businesses
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A 19-year-old and the club where she worked as a stripper have sued Florida’s attorney general and two local prosecutors. They want to stop enforcement of a new Florida law prohibiting adult entertainment businesses from employing people who are under age 21. They claim it violates their First Amendment and Fourth Amendment rights. Serenity Michelle Bushey says that she lost her job at Cafe Risque in the Gainesville area after the law took effect on Monday. Florida lawmakers say the purpose of the law is to deter human trafficking.
