Maine lobsterman jumps from boat to help rescue a driver from a submerged car

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A lobsterman in Maine jumped from a boat into the water to help save a driver trapped in a sinking car, police said. The car drove into Casco Bay shortly after noon on Thursday, according to police in Portland, Maine. Police and fire crews were able to force entry into the vehicle while it was underwater. The lobster boat was nearby. Manny Kourinos, who was on board, jumped in and helped pull out the driver, police said. The water temperature was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Honda recalls nearly 250K vehicles because bearing can fail

DETROIT (AP) — Honda is recalling nearly 250,000 vehicles in the U.S. because bearings can fail, causing the engines to stall and increasing the risk of a crash. The recall covers certain 2018 and 2019 Honda Pilot SUVs and Odyssey minivans and some 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline pickup trucks. Also affected are certain 2015 to 2020 Acura TLX cars and some 2016 to 2020 Acura MDX SUVs. Honda says in documents posted Friday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that connecting rod bearings in the engine can wear and seize due to a manufacturing error, damaging the engines.

Alex Murdaugh pleads guilty to financial crimes in state court

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Alex Murdaugh pleaded guilty Friday to financial crimes in state court, adding to the prison time facing the longtime lawyer who was convicted of killing his wife and son. Murdaugh agreed to plead guilty to more than a dozen counts, including money laundering, breach of trust and financial fraud, in exchange for a 27-year sentence. The sentence must be approved by Judge Clifton Newman, who set a sentencing hearing for Nov. 28 at which victims or their families will get to speak.

Ethics chairman launches a new bid to expel George Santos

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Ethics Committee announced Friday he has filed a resolution to force a vote on expelling Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., from Congress, one day after the committee issued a withering report detailing substantial evidence that Santos converted campaign donations for his own personal use. Santos easily survived an expulsion vote earlier this month as lawmakers in both parties stressed the need to allow due process, as Santos is also facing nearly two dozen charges in federal court. But the release of the committee’s findings has generated new momentum for ousting the scandal-plagued freshman.

Judge rejects plea for Pa. woman charged with killing her 2 young children

READING, Pa. (AP) — A judge has rejected a plea agreement for a Pennsylvania woman charged with killing her two young children. The 4-year-old and 8-year-old died three days after they were found hanging in the basement of their home about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia nearly four years ago. Forty-year-old Lisa Snyder on Friday pleaded no contest but mentally ill to third-degree murder. The judge said the plea doesn’t serve justice and rejected it. The case now heads to trial.
