Sleepy Eye FFA qualifies four more teams for state

The Sleepy Eye Future Farmers of America (FFA) members competed in the last Region VI Contests for the year on March 31st at the BARC in Windom.

The Soils and Poultry teams both took second place while Nursery Landscape took 3rd and Floriculture qualified with fourth place. 

In the soils contest, members judge different soil profiles, and identify soil characteristics, including texture, depths, and erosion potential.

The soils team placed second  in the competition out of eight teams. Team members included: Riley Voigt (third place individual), Braylon Nelson (sixth place individual), JP Montemayor (10th place individual), Ethan Feucht and Carson Sellner.

The poultry team was the second Place Team overall out of 13 teams and qualified for the state competition in April. The team consisted of Mateo Hornsby (third place individual), Ava Sellner (fifth place individual), Kayden Klein (ninth place individual), Carsten Nienhaus (10th place individual), Madelynn Mangen.

The Poultry CDE involves judging chicken and turkey carcasses, eggs, processed poultry, chicken parts identification, and taking a poultry knowledge test.

The Nursery Landscape Team earned third place out of eight teams. Team members included: Madi Martinez (sixth individual), Kenley Jensen (seventh individual), Kamille Capacia (ninth Individual), Chloe Okerman, Maddy Jensen. 

The NL contest tests student knowledge of plants, flowers, weeds, trees, diseases, and equipment seen and used in landscaping. They are also tested on their identification of these as well as completing a practicum of using an architect’s scale and figuring out volume and area for different plots.

The Floriculture Team earned fourth Place out of 17 teams with Elsie Trebesch placing first overall! Other team members include: Karina Martinez, Ella Arkins, Paola Gonzalez, Ari Hernandez. 

The Floriculture CDE tests student knowledge of flowers and plants, growing media, fertilizer, greenhouse management, design concepts, and the floriculture industry. They also are tested on their identification skills of annuals, cut flowers, greenhouse crops, and floriculture equipment and tools as well as their skills in creating a corsage.

All of the teams also advanced to State Competition which will be held in the Twin Cities from April 19th-21st.
