NEW ULM — Students from all programs at River Bend Education District came together this February to spread kindness and connection throughout the New Ulm community.
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, students created and decorated 120 handmade Valentine cards that were delivered Feb. 11 to residents at Oak Hills Living Facility in New Ulm.
The project was a collaborative effort, with students from every River Bend program contributing their creativity and time.
From colorful designs and heartfelt messages to thoughtful artwork, each Valentine was made with care. The delivery was especially meaningful for students in the World of Responsible Kids (W.O.R.K.) program, who personally brought the cards to Oak Hills residents.
River Bend and Oak Hills share a strong and growing partnership. W.O.R.K. students frequently participate in work experiences in the activities and housekeeping departments and maintain pen pal relationships with Oak Hills residents.
Oak Hills volunteer and activities coordinator, Rachal Becker, helped facilitate and support this ongoing partnership.
Oak Hills also partners with River Bend through participation in monthly Worksite Awareness Tours. During these tours, students from the PAES (Practical Assessment Exploration System) and W.O.R.K. programs visit local businesses and facilities to learn about workplace expectations, job responsibilities, and the skills needed for entry-level employment.
Becker has students, hosted tours, and shared insights into what employers look for in dependable, responsible employees.
These hands-on experiences are a vital part of River Bend’s mission to prepare students for success in work and life. By building strong community partnerships, students gain real-world exposure while local businesses have the opportunity to invest in the next generation of workers.
River Bend is always looking to expand its network of community partnerships for future Worksite Awareness Tours. Local businesses and organizations interested in hosting students and sharing information about workplace expectations are encouraged to connect with Jennifer Isaac or Elise Croning at River Bend.
Through projects like the Valentine’s delivery and ongoing partnerships with organizations such as Oak Hills, River Bend students continue to demonstrate compassion, responsibility, and a commitment to community.
