Sleepy Eye FFA Meats Team qualifies for State

On Monday, October 13, Sleepy Eye’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Meats and Livestock Evaluation Teams competed in the Region VI Competition at South Dakota State University. 

The Meats Team earned 3nd Place out of 13 teams and 56 individuals. Team members include: Makayla Strong, Zack Dominguez, Yuridia Fernandez, Alex Confer, and Emerson Johnson. The Meats Evaluation and Technology CDE has students judge the quality yield and grade of beef carcasses and evaluate and place beef and pork carcasses. Students also identify various cuts of meat in relation to species, primal, and retail cuts. 

The Livestock Evaluation Team earned 13th place out of 18 teams and 77 individuals. Team members included: Kylie Fischer, Chloe Schwab, and Ruby Tauer. During the Livestock Evaluation CDE, students evaluate beef cattle, sheep, goats, and swine on physical characteristics and records for market and breeding usage. Members give oral reasons explaining their placing of certain classes.

The Meats team qualified for the State Competition that will be held at the State Convention in April.
