Bach & Brews program coming to Schell’s Sunday

NEW ULM — The popular Minneapolis music series Bach & Brews comes to Schells’ Biergarten at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23. The professional singers and chamber orchestra, led by New Ulm native Matthew Olson, will present a program including J.S. Bach’s Coffee Cantata – a witty and funny story of a father trying to convince his daughter to quit her caffeine addiction.

The performance also includes instrumental music by Telemann, Baroque drinking songs, and audience sing-a-longs. The program is free and open to the public.

Artistic Director Matthew Olson is a 2002 graduate of New Ulm Senior High. At the age of 16, he founded and director Iuventus Chorale – a honors choir for youth from south-central Minnesota which recorded cd’s and presenting concerts in New Ulm from 2000-2002. Following high school, Olson pursued advanced degrees in choral and orchestral conducting, and is now Director of Choral Activities at Carleton College, Artistic Director of Bach Roots Festival, and Assistant Conductor of the profession choir called The Singers.

Summer Solstice Celebration

NEW ULM — A Summer Solstice Celebration for all ages will be held at at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21 at Flandrau State Park, New Ulm

Childrens activities, including games and crafts, will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the beach house. A Grand March with music accompaniment by MusikMeisters will begin at 8 p.m. followed by a May Pole activity.

A brief time for reflection and refreshments will conclude the evening’s activities. All are welcome to this free event sponsored by Nora Unitarian Universalist Church, Hanska.

A park sticker or $7 daily admission fee is required for park entrance. Walk-ins may attend without charge.

Friday Afternoon Movie at the library

NEW ULM — New Ulm Public Library will show a space-themed children’s movie at 2 p.m. Friday, June 21. This movie is rated PG and runs for 94 minutes. Free popcorn will be served.

Movie screenings at the library are free and open to the public, and sponsored by the Optimist Club of New Ulm. Visit www.newulmlibrary.org or call 507-359-8331 for the film title and more information.

Reading is FUNdamental with DonB!

NEW ULM — If you can read, you can learn to do anything! That is the message that champion unicyclist DonB! will be promoting at 2 p.m. June 25 at the New Ulm Civic Center through tricks and feats he performs while riding his unicycle.

The Friends of the New Ulm Public Library present “Reading is FUNdamental with DonB!” This is a 45- minute program that entertains so much you won’t know you’re being educated.

This program is free and open to the public. Please note this program is now being held at the South Center of the New Ulm Civic Center, located at 1212 N. Franklin Street.

Better Breathers Club

NEW ULM — The next Better Breathers Club of New Ulm meeting will feature a presentation, “Lung Diseases – Identification, Prevention & Symptom Management” and attendees will learn about a variety of lung diseases, how to prevent breathing problems, identify a cough and how to manage it. The meeting will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 at the New Ulm Medical Center in the Hospital’s Auditorium on the third floor.
