Slower speed limit signs coming to Springfield

Speed limit 45 signs to be placed on CSAH 5 south of railroad tracks

NEW ULM — In response to concerns about speeding and vehicles running a 4-way stop, Brown County Highway Engineer Andrew Lang told county commissioners Tuesday that new 45 mph speed limit signs were recently ordered for Brown County Highway 5 (East End Ave.) in Springfield.

Lang said the new speed limit signs will likely be placed on CR 5 next week.

Last May, county commissioners unanimously approved a resolution asking the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to do a speed study after the county highway department heard public concerns of drivers speeding outside the city limits, from Highway 14 to CR 24 on East End Ave. and running stop signs when traveling north and south on the road.

Lang said he heard concerns about pedestrian safety on the county highway from St. John’s Home staff and pedestrians last year.

“The state completed the CSAH 5 speed study and determined the speed will be posted at 45 mph from Highway 14 to 400 feet south of the CSAH 14 intersection, so we ordered signs that will be posted as soon as they come in,” he said. “It should be good for pedestrian safety. The speed limit is 55 mph south of the railroad tracks now.”

Lang said the county highway’s speed limits are 30 mph from Highway 14 south to the railroad tracks. The speed limit increased to 55 mph south of the tracks with 45 mph advisory signs near the St. John Lutheran Home entrance and north of the county highway 24 intersection. A four-way stop is located at the intersection of Highway 5 and Cottonwood St.
