NEW ULM — The Martin County West Mavericks outscored New Ulm Cathedral 9-3 in the last two minutes of the second overtime and went on to top the Greyhounds 87-84 in the first round of the Section 2A Boys Basketball Tournament.

Chase Owen led the Mavericks (4-23) with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Jackson Wilmes had 15 points and Landen Winter had 14 points.

The Mavericks move on to play at top-seeded Springfield on Tuesday.

Eli Anderson led the Greyhounds, who end their season at 8-19, with a game-high 35 points. Quinten Forst added 21 and Logan Goblirsch ended with 20 points.

“I told the kids after the game that looking at it as a single game that we did not come with the right intensity right away and we did not come with the right energy,” Cathedral head coach Zach Kaiser said. “We had it in the first but we did not make the hustle plays and we did not rebound well. We did not do enough and we got outworked.”

The first 18 minutes saw both teams take leads, with the Greyhounds taking a 14-9 lead before the Mavericks went on a 17-2 run to take a 26-16 lead.

Treys from Knox Larson and Lixon Forsberg and a basket from Caiden Loken gave the Mavericks a 10-point lead.

But Cathedral came back and tied the game at 27-27 at halftime thanks to 5 points from Goblirsch.

“That seemed like that was the kind of game it was especially in the second half,” Kaiser said. “In the second half we would throw a punch and they would throw a punch back — we hit a big shot and they’d hit a big shot.”

MCW held a 46-40 lead on a Wilmes jumper before Cathedral came back to take a 54-52 lead.

But the Mavericks grabbed a 65-61 lead with 40 seconds left in regulation on a Winter basket.

The Greyhounds then forced overtime on two free throws from Goblirsch and Anderson.

Anderson’s 3 with 40 seconds left in overtime had Cathedral leading 74-71.

But Owens conventional 3-point basket with 24 seconds left in overtime knotted the game again at 74-74.

Cathedral took that 5-point lead late in the second overtime before the Mavericks took over started by a 3 from Forsberg.

“We would force a miss and they would get a hustle play or rebound and that would create extra opportunities for them,” Kaiser said. “And in my opinion those were bigger momentum swings. We had chances to win it but we missed an open layup — turned it over on our next possession. In the end they had more in the tank than we did.”
