NEW ULM — Ben Doeden, a familiar face at the city’s aquatics and fitness programs, has been promoted to program supervisor at the New Ulm Park & Recreation Department.

Doeden, who most recently served as aquatics and fitness coordinator, said he plans to bring a hands-on approach to all programs across the department.

“My previous role has taught me to be visible, approachable and invested both in our staff and participants,” Doeden said. “I plan to bring that same hands-on mindset to every program. I enjoy the interactions I have with the community every day, and I hope to grow and expand that investment as I take on this new position.”

During his tenure as aquatics and fitness coordinator, Doeden helped revamp swim lessons, enhance fitness programs and improve part-time staff training. He said he focused on listening to the community and adjusting programs based on feedback.

“We’ve added programs for more age groups, refined long-standing programs and continuously adapted to what people are seeking,” Doeden said. “One of the biggest highlights has been our senior programming. We’ve introduced new courses, staff training and adjustments based on community feedback.”

Doeden said a successful program extends beyond participation to personal growth, confidence and enjoyment.

“Supporting individuals as they learn a skill, gain confidence or simply have fun is always the goal, and that will continue moving forward,” he said.

Looking ahead, Doeden said he is focused on expanding summer activities and refining existing programs.

“Taking initiative to ensure we are facilitating what people want and delivering high-quality, accessible programs will be a big focus,” he said.

Doeden said the department will continue to offer staple programs while remaining open to new ideas and feedback.

“My goal is for everyone to feel there is something in the New Ulm Park & Rec system that would interest them or their family, whether in programs, parks or facilities,” he said.

Colleagues and participants have noted Doeden’s presence at the pool and fitness classes, which he said helps him stay connected with the community. In his new role, he will oversee all recreational programs for residents of all ages.

Starting at $4.50/week.
