New Ulm man accused of burglarizing smoke shop

NEW ULM — A 46-year-old New Ulm man faces four felony charges following a Jan. 14 burglary at the Smoke N Cloud shop, 701 North Broadway.

Justin Dennis Tollefson was charged with felony third-degree burglary, possession of burglary or theft tools, theft and first-degree damage to property value reduce over $1,000 in Brown County District Court Tuesday.

New Ulm Police were called to a reported burglary at the Smoke N Cloud shop at 12:02 a.m. Jan. 14. Officers found the front door of the business completely shattered and a store employee who was contacted by the store owner who said surveillance cameras notified him of the burglary.

Officers watched surveillance footage that showed an individual stealing several boxes of hydroxymitragynine from a display area. The suspect wore a red hoodie with white logo on the upper left side, blue jeans, black tennis shoes with white soles and a ski mask.

The store manager watched surveillance footage and immediately identified the suspect as a customer who often enters the store and buys the same items that were stolen, according to court documents.

Police watched a Dec. 30, 2025 video showing the individual store staff identified as the burglary suspect, wearing the same clothing as the Jan. 14 burglary suspect.

Officers obtained a search warrant for Tollefson’s residence and found many of items reported stolen from the business. The total value of stolen items was $1,048.80. Store front door damage was estimated at more than $1,000.

Tollefson was arrested and transported to the Brown County Jail. He refused to provide a statement to police. An omnibus hearing was set for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 17.
