NEW ULM — The District 88 school board met the new school readiness/ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) program coordinator at a study session Thursday.

Ashley Genelin of Le Center introduced herself and presented preschool program highlights.

She is the founder and president of the Mighty Myles Superhero Network, a non-profit organization that supports families of chronically ill children, families experiencing child loss and those that support them.

Genelin said her son Myles died a few years ago from an illness caused by a genetic condition.

She formerly taught preschool, ECFE, grade school and special education at Cleveland Public School and New Country School in Henderson.

“I came to New Ulm because I was looking for more of an administrative role,” said Genelin.

She said five-day programs are available but three and four-year olds can register programs three or four days a week.

“I did a survey with preschool and ECFE teachers to see what people in the program want and I did an online survey. I got 50 responses online and talked to a number of people in the program who said they wanted a three, four and five-day programs for different reasons,” said Genelin.

She said new preschool policies this year are potty training is required, kindergarten eligible students are placed on a wait list until July 1. Parent information night will be held in December.

“We really want kids to go to kindergarten. The Minnesota Department of Education wants them to stay with their same-age peers,” said Genelin. ”

Registration began Jan. 5. A $50 non-refundable fee is required. To register, visit newulm.ce.elyo.com. Tuition is billed monthly.

She follows ECFE coordinator Betty Uehling who retired in August after 33 years with District 88.

Superintendent Sean Koster thanked Genelin for her presentation.

“Thank you for all the energy you bring. A fresh perspective, a new lens is beneficial,” he said.
