Snow removal crews getting ‘back in the swing of things’

Winter snow returns

A light snowfall fell on New Ulm Monday following a weekend-long snow event that left around seven inches on the ground.

NEW ULM – Snow returns to the New Ulm area this weekend.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported around seven inches of snow fell on New Ulm between Friday evening and Sunday. A few light flurries fell around noon Monday.

NWS meteorologist Paige Veserat New Ulm will continue to see a chance of flurries Tuesday and Wednesday, but said it was unlikely to be more than a mild dusting.

“The clouds are are a level where snow forms, which is whey we’re getting these smalls snow flurries,” Veserat said.

The forecast is not showing any large snow events within the next week, however temperatures are expected to drop.

Veserat said Thursday will be a dry with not a lot of wind, but the air temperatures is forecasted at negative 10 degrees.

Veserat said this winter season look like a return to normal in terms of weather. She said the last two years were anomalies.

The weekend snowstorm was the first major snowfall of the season and the first chance for New Ulm Street Department to clear the roads.

New Ulm Public Works Superintendent Jeff Hoffmann said overall street plowing went well, but it was a drawn out process. Since the snow on Saturday was continuous, the plows focused on keeping the main roads clear and sanded.

On Sunday after the snow stopped, the city started to plowed the entire town. A downtown snow emergency was issued for Monday morning to allow city staff to plow the downtown.

Hoffmann said Tuesday morning the crews will be out to haul out the large piles of snow from city parking lots.

After two years of mild winters, this weekends snow was a good warmup. Hoffman reminded people that during a snow emergency it is helpful to remove garbage cans from the street and move vehicles to speed up the clearing process.

“We’re getting back into the swing of things,” Hoffmann said.
