Police chief offers Halloween safety tips
NEW ULM — As trick-or-treaters show off their best costumes on Friday and collect candy, and forever memories are created with family, the New Ulm Police Department will be focused on maintaining community safety.
“We spread out to different sections of the city, so that we have more visibility. (There will be) nine officers working various shifts throughout evening and early morning hours,” said New Ulm Police Chief Dave Borchert.
Some of the best ways that Borchert advises staying safe this Halloween is to plan ahead and stay vigilant. In addition, he says be mindful of people walking around.
“Please be extra careful and alert while driving,” he said. “Be aware that there might be some excited young people crossing streets that are distracted.Always try to watch out for your other community members.”
Before the big day, Borchert suggests parents engage their kids in discussion about safety and to develop a plan as well as put into action a team system.
“Consider talking about ‘situational awareness,’ which is being aware of their surroundings,” he said. “Also, it’s a great idea for children to practice the buddy system and watch out for your own and friend’s

Other key tips to staying safe on a fun-filled night, avoid excessive drinking and never drive a vehicle when impaired. Additionally, be respectful and don’t let the fun get out of hand and turn criminal, Finally, Borchert recommends carrying a flashlight or glow stick in order to stay visible in the dark.
