Police find guns, meth at traffic stop

WINTHROP — A 32-year-old New Ulm man stopped for speeding near Winthrop Sunday faces five charges including two felonies in Sibley County.

Winthrop police stopped Brett Matthew Zangel and noticed a hypodermic needle in his pocket, according to court records.

Zangel told police he was carrying a pistol and he was not legally allowed to have a firearm, according to court records. During a search of the vehicle, a baggie containing a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 0.7 grams was found.

A 10-gauge shotgun, two 12-gauge shotguns with 51 shells, a 410-shotgun with 24 shells, and 114 rounds of 9mm ammunition, were also found in the search, according to court records.

Zangel was arrested and a search warrant was obtained and executed for a sample of his blood. A sample was collected and sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for analysis.

According to court records, Zangel’s driver’s license came back revoked. He also has an April 7 second-degree burglary conviction and DWI convictions from Oct. 26, 2023 and Oct. 12, 2021.

Currently in Sibley County Jail custody, Zangel faces felony unlawful possession of a firearm or ammunition and fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, gross misdemeanor second-degree DWI, gross misdemeanor driving after revocation and misdemeanor open bottle law violation charges.

Zangel’s bail/bond was set at $750,000 without conditions, $200,000 with conditions and $20,000 cash bail with conditions Monday. An omnibus hearing was set for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 20.
