NEW ULM — Dock Dog contestants at the Brown County Fair Friday included Amanda Dolly of Sleepy Eye and her yellow lab “Rebel.”

The sport is promoted by Dockdogs.com as the “fastest-growing sport on four legs.”

She competed in the Big Air Wave event with a number of other area competitors including Levi Lindquist of New Ulm and his yellow Labrador and Brianna Samuelson of St. Peter and her black Laborador.

Dolly said her husband Brent decided to try dock dogs out on a Saturday morning at the 2014 Brown County Fair with their chocolate Laborador dog “Remmy.”

“He started jumping nine to ten feet and just kept going farther and farther,” she said. “Now it’s our hobby. We started traveling with the Minnesota Dock Dogs Northern Stars Club to events on weekends. Since then, we’ve competed in contests in nine states including Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Kansas and Oklahoma.”

In 2017, Dolly’s Shepherd-Lab dog, now 12 years old, won the world championship. She plans to compete with him beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Brown County Fair.

“I like the dock dog community. Everybody is good friends. We like to get new people involved. Everybody helps each other out and support them. It’s fun,” said Dolly, now president of the Northern Stars club.

The Dollys have three dock dogs now, a Shepherd-Labrador, Yellow Labrador and a Belgian Malnois.

Dock dog contestants at the Brown County Fair this weekend include the Minnesota State record holder Luke Richmann of Maplewood. His Border Collie-Whippet dog holds the state record for big air at 30 feet, three inches.

Brown County Fair Dock Dog events begin at 11, a.m., 12:30, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
