HANSKA — On a typical day, the youth in Hanska’s Park and Recreation program would be playing games or making craft projects in Hanska City Park, but Monday they decided to take part in an annual philanthropic endenvor.

From 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, the kids operated a lemonade stands on Broadway in Hanska to raise funds for New Ulm Ministerial Association (NUMAS) Haus and the Sertoma Club of New Ulm.

Rhonda Froehling, director of Hanska Park & Rec said the lemonade fundraiser has been going on for five years. Each year, the kids operate the lemonade stand to help a different area nonprofit.

This year, the kids suggested they try something different. Instead of operating one lemonade stand at Hanska City Park, they would operate two stands at separate intersections. The main lemonade stand remained at Hanska City Park the second on located a block north at East 2nd Street.

“The kids believed we were missing out on customers going to the post office,” Froehling said.

A group of girls agreed to set up a stand near the intersection by the post office. Natalie Schultz said the corner was not as popular as they thought it would be. Most of the post office traffic failed to stop at their stand, but a few individuals who parked at the stop sign made purchases. The girls estimated they made a little over $100 at the second spot.

The boys running the stand out of the park had a little bit more luck with several vehicles stopping at a gas station across the street. Once they stopped, the kids would do their best to pull them over.

Jack Anderson said the trick to getting people to stop was to really wave the lemonade sign.

“We were able to get a semi to stop that way,” Liam Schultz said.

Bentley Johnson said they managed to get most people to stop at the park’s lemonade stand, whether it was a plumber or a dog walker.

Typically, the kids raise a few hundred dollars. The most they’ve ever earned from the fundraiser is $600, but Froehling said it helps to let the kids see how volunteering can help the community.
