NEW ULM — A perfect summer evening set the scene Thursday night as families, friends and neighbors filled German Park for the annual New Ulm Night Out celebration, a free community event aimed at bringing people together for food, fun, and public safety awareness.

Hosted by the City of New Ulm Parks and Recreation Department, the New Ulm Police Department, the New Ulm Fire Department and the United Way of Brown County, the evening featured something for everyone. Local vendors lined the park paths, food trucks served up crowd favorites, and ice cream helped keep attendees cool as children laughed and played nearby.

The event wasn’t just about entertainment, it also focused on connecting residents with the city’s emergency services. One of the highlights of the evening came from the New Ulm Fire Department, which put on a live grease fire safety demonstration. Firefighters showed what can happen when water is mistakenly used on a grease fire, sending flames bursting skyward, a powerful and memorable lesson on fire safety at home.

“This was my first year being part of this,” said Jeremy Lieder with the New Ulm Fire Department. “It’s a great event for the community, to be involved, be social, and just have a good time. We enjoy talking with people and sharing useful safety tips.”

New Ulm Police Chief David Borchert was pleased with both the turnout and the community’s enthusiasm.

“The event is going very well. We’ve had a great turnout,” Borchert said. “I’m very pleased with the support from the New Ulm community. It’s great to see everyone out enjoying the night together.”

Adding to the festive atmosphere was live entertainment by the Schell’s Hobo Band, who performed as part of the city’s “Music in the Park” summer series. Their lively mix of circus-style band, military music and old-time favorites filled the park with toe-tapping rhythms and cheerful melodies.

“It was plain fun,” said Ed Stock, a longtime member of the Hobo Band. “It’s always special to play in New Ulm. We do some newer stuff, but try to keep it relevant,” he added with a laugh.

Attendees shared the same upbeat feeling.

New Ulm resident Nick Risen said events like this are what make the community stand out. “It’s a great night to celebrate the community,” Risen said. “It really brings people together and reminds us what makes New Ulm so special.”
