Wendinger Band brings classic polka sounds to German Park

A cheerful crowd gathers at German Park for this week’s Concert in the Park.

NEW ULM — A warm summer breeze, timeless polka tunes, and the familiar sounds of the Wendinger Band filled German Park this week as part of the city’s Concert in the Park summer series, Music in the Park.

The Wendinger Band, a New Ulm staple known for their upbeat polka, waltz, and two-step music, drew a cheerful hometown crowd to the German Park amphitheater on a picture-perfect evening, gnats aside.

Peter Wendinger, who has been performing for an impressive 64 years, said it was a joy to be back in his hometown.

“It’s always fun and a pleasure to perform in front of a hometown crowd,” Wendinger said. “We’ve been on the road so much through the years, and most of us are semi-retired now. But anytime we get to play in New Ulm, it’s great to be back and to perform in this amazing venue.”

The Wendinger Band has long been a favorite throughout the Midwest, bringing traditional German-American music to festivals, parades, and events. Their performance at German Park this week was a mix of polkas, waltzes, and two-steps that had toes tapping and spirits lifted.

Adding to the evening’s local flair was a surprise guest appearance by the Narren of New Ulm, the city’s beloved costumed characters who celebrate German heritage through music, dance, and joyful mischief. Their playful presence brought smiles to kids and adults alike as they mingled with the crowd and joined in the festivities.

Among the attendees was New Ulm resident Dale Gluth, who said he and his wife have been attending the Music in the Park series for years.

“I love German Park, it’s an amazing park,” Gluth said. “My wife and I have been coming here for years. Where else can you go for the price of the ticket” he laughed. “We came out tonight especially for the Wendinger Band.”

The Music in the Park series is sponsored by New Ulm Parks and Recreation and KNUJ, with each week featuring a different musical act.

Next week’s performance will be held on Thursday, July 24, featuring the Mages Family Band, another well-loved local group. Adding to the evening’s offerings, food will be available from the popular food truck Illegal Amigos.
