Brown Co. board rejects request for deputy position
Commissioners cite budget challenges
NEW ULM — Citing budget challenges, Brown County Commissioners turned down a request to add a deputy sergeant position for the 2026 budget by a 4-1 vote Tuesday.
The cost of adding a deputy position including benefits and a squad vehicle was estimated to cost $178,000 a year.
Brown County Sheriff Jason Seidl said the request was made to avoid operating at minimum staffing levels at certain times of the day or night.
“We’re historically understaffed,” said Seidl. “When we take a deputy off the road for a transport, it takes most of the day.”
He presented deputy comparisons with 17 other similar sized counties including calls for service. The data showed Brown County has 14 licensed deputies, as many as six fewer deputies compared to counties with similar population.
Commissioner Dave Borchert who is also the New Ulm police chief, said he agreed with most of Seidl’s request and thanked him for a good presentation.
“I think there are more conservative options available. The contract allows for an eight, nine or 10-hour work day,” said Borchert. “Right now, three neighboring counties have hiring freezes. I see a rocky road ahead with budgets, especially in the next biennium.”
Borchert said if the sheriff’s office switched from a 10-hour to nine-hour schedule with officers working nine days per pay period, it would translate to one extra officer working every day of the year. He said an eight-hour workday would translate into two extra officers a day.
Commissioner Jeff Veerkamp said he could not support the request due to budget concerns.
“I agree Brown County is at the low end with deputies in the county survey. I wish we could add one,” said Commissioner Scott Windschitl.
Commissioner Brian Braun said he continues to support adding a deputy sheriff. He made a motion to approve the request. Commissioner Tony Berg said he didn’t support the request but seconded the motion to move it a roll call vote.
Braun was the only commissioner who supported the request.
