Weather forces band out of park and into the community center
NEW ULM — Rain forced the New Ulm Municipal Band to perform indoors at the Community Center Wednesday as part of the summer concert series.
Band director Don Jirak said they wished they could be in German Park, but said, “there is no reason they couldn’t still have fun.”
The band opened the show with a performance of Henry Fillmore’s “Black Mask,” followed by the Fürstenberg-March by composer Hans Hartwig.
Band member Dan Groebner said the band plays selections from a variety of nationalities, but often returns to German composers. He said of the 13 selections played during Wednesday’s performance, four were German in origin. One selection, called “Schunkeln Parade” was actually a medley of Germany waltzes. “Schunkeln” is a term used to describe a type of rhythmic swaying. Audiences link hands with the person next to them and sway with the rhythm. Groebner encouraged the audience to sway to the medley.
The New Ulm Municipal Band will hold its next performance at 6:30 p.m. at Oak Hills Living Center for the annual ice cream social.
