Mayor Backer brings butter making to Kiesling House

NEW ULM — New Ulm Mayor Kathleen Backer isn’t just the city’s leader– she’s also a passionate butter enthusiast with a deep appreciation for pioneer-era traditions.

That enthusiasm was on full display Saturday, June 7, when Mayor Backer hosted a hands-on butter-making demonstration at the historic Kiesling House.

Using small jars, participants were invited to shake cream into butter, guided by Mayor Backer herself.

“I grew up making butter,” said Backer. “It’s something I still enjoy doing in my free time, and I want others to experience how simple and rewarding it can be.”

The event is part of an ongoing effort to connect the community with New Ulm’s rich history. The Kiesling House, one of the few surviving structures from the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, provided a fitting backdrop for this pioneer craft.

If you missed it, there’s another chance to join in: on Saturday, July 12, Mayor Backer will return to the Kiesling House for another demonstration from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $3, while BCHS members and children 4 and under are free.

Starting at $4.50/week.
