NEW ULM — River Valley BMX hosted its first outdoor state qualifier on Saturday, drawing around 100 racers and an estimated 1,500 spectators to the local track.

The event marked a major milestone for the nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, which has been steadily growing its presence in the Minnesota BMX scene.

This year, River Valley BMX launched a beginner league aimed at introducing kids to the sport in a fun and supportive environment.

“We have an amazing track crew who help run these events,” said Brittany Nosbush, a volunteer with River Valley BMX. “We’re grateful for our sponsors who help us grow the sport and for the supportive community here in New Ulm.”

Among the vendors at the event was Full Tilt Bike Co. from St. Cloud. Johnny Vance, a representative of the traveling BMX race shop, said they travel across the country and attend all of Minnesota’s state races. Full Tilt offers a variety of BMX racing gear and services, helping racers stay competitive and equipped.

Riders from across the region shared their excitement for the sport and the New Ulm event.

Kevin Madson of Mankato said, “It’s great exercise, I love it. Everyone here helps each other out. It’s a great atmosphere. This is my second year of state racing, and I come to New Ulm every Monday for local races.”

Local rider Thomas Gent, 17, has been racing since he was nine.

“This event gives people something to do. It’s close to home, and the track is open all the time for when I want to come practice,” he said.

Marc Fritzmier of Rochester has been attending state races in New Ulm for the past six years. A lifelong rider, Fritzmier said he’s been racing since the 1980s and arrived Friday night to take part in practice runs.

Joey Burthiaume of White Bear Lake, a Pro-Am rider representing Rum River BMX, has been racing for 17 years. Now 36, he recently returned to the sport after a 10-year break.

“This is my first time racing in the heat this year, and it feels good to be outside,” he said. “The New Ulm track is fast, the atmosphere is amazing, and the volunteers put together a great event.”

With strong community support, dedicated volunteers, and growing interest from riders of all ages, the New Ulm state qualifier highlighted the energy and excitement of BMX racing in Minnesota.
