NEW ULM – Downtown New Ulm is getting more colorful as the flowers start going up on Minnesota Street.

Wednesday morning, Spencer Hammer, Roberto Gonzalez and Brian Guttum hung 120 flower baskets from light posts on Minnesota Street. The flower baskets are the first wave of flowers. Thursday afternoon volunteers will finish planting flowers in 101 flower beds throughout downtown. All of the flowers used in the basket and planters come from Hacker’s Tree Farm & Greenhouse.

The cost of the flowers is covered by Minnesota Valley Funeral Home and New Ulm Monument. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home General Manager Eric Warmka said each of the flower basket and flower beds serves as a living memorial for those who died in 2024. Each basket and flower pot includes a stake with a name and were served by the funeral home.

The downtown flower tradition, meant to add color and beauty to downtown, has continued since the mid 1990s. The flowers will remain outside through September or as long as they last.

Starting at $4.50/week.
