NEW ULM – The Martin Luther College (MLC) Class of 2025 gathered with family, friends, and faculty on Saturday, May 17, for a moving and memorable Commencement Service.

At the heart of the ceremony was an Easter-centered message from MLC President Rev. Dr. Richard Gurgel, who reminded graduates of the lasting victory they have in Christ.

Dr. Rich Gurgel, president of MLC, delivered a sermon grounded in 1 Corinthians 15. Drawing from the hope of Christ’s resurrection, Gurgel reminded graduates that they are “living on the right side of Easter,” equipped not only with academic training but also with a calling rooted in God’s victory over death.

Following the morning service, the Call Service was held at 2:30 p.m., during which ministry placements were announced for 146 graduates preparing to serve in churches, schools, and missions.

The commencement weekend also featured a Friday night concert showcasing the musical talents of the student body and an alumni dinner on Saturday evening at Turner Hall, where current graduates connected with past MLC alumni.

Graduates shared their reflections on the day’s significance.

“Today was awesome — six years of effort thinking about this day, becoming a teacher. It’s a blessing to finally see it all come together,” said Joshua Aden, of Reedsville, Wisconsin, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Education.

“It was nerve-racking but super exciting,” said Kevin Renner, from Rochester, Minnesota, a Bachelor of Science graduate. “I’m ready for the next chapter.”

George Sims, of Franklin, Wisconsin, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Education, highlighted the ceremony’s atmosphere.

“It was super fun — standard, really organized, which stuck out to me,” he said.

“Today, we celebrate the answer to the prayers of hundreds and thousands who have prayed for more gospel workers to share the good news with the world,” Rev. Gurgel said.

President Gurgel concluded his message with this promise.

“Paul is not speaking of God’s demand of you,” he said. “This is the power of God’s promise to you.”

The 2025 Commencement Service was more than a celebration of academic success; it was a commissioning of gospel servants grounded in resurrection hope.
