NEW ULM – Last Wednesday Cathedral High School was humming with activity.
This year New Ulm Area Catholic Schools (NUACS) decided to combine high school and elementary concerts and showcase artwork along with industrial arts projects.
St. Anthony Elementary principal Karen Schulte said, “We decided to combine concerts that were previously held separately into one big night because many parents have students in both schools.”
The auditorium was full of students, appreciative families and friends to help celebrate creativity and imagination.
Elementary choirs were directed by Kala Gaalswyk and 5th grade band by Nate Sperl. The theme was tropical, and students were festively dressed. Music selections fit the mood such as “La Bamba,” “Under the Sea,” “Montego Bay” and “Lava.” A surprise rendition of “Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer” drew a big applause, especially from teachers and parents who grew up with this music.

St. Anthony Elementary principal Karen Schulte introduced her students and said how proud she was of all of their hard work.
At the intermission, concessions were staffed by volunteers. The proceeds will benefit the theater programs for the coming year. Supporting the arts at New Ulm Area Catholic Schools is integral to an overall well-rounded education.
The music and art appreciation show highlights the creativity that is being generated throughout the year. Administrative assistant Jane Nosbush said the spring concert “was a chance to see the progression of how much the students have grown in their creative endeavors.”
Michael Koester who’s in his second year directing the high school choirs said “I’ve seen the students improve over the school year and been impressed by their hard work. We are happy to showcase their efforts with this concert for their families and the public.”
In addition to the visual arts displays curated by art teacher Margaret Blomberg, the industrial arts and welding classrooms were open to the public showcasing woodworking projects of some very talented students. Guided by industrial art teacher Dennis Lux and Craig Smith who is the agriculture and welding instructor these practical and utilitarian projects are also works of art.
The music performances were well received, and the art displays got a lot of attention.
