A small place, but lots of bait and tackle

Darrin Weigel shows off some river mix— live bait filled with Red Darts, a fish Walleye love.

NEW ULM – Angry Minnow Live Bait on Broadway might be a small place, but they’re stocked with everything needed for fishing, including three chest tanks for live fish, a wall of tackle, rods, reels, and a fridge full of worms.

The business opened April 26 at the new location of 1411 S Broadway Street in the back of X-treme Clean Car Wash.

Darrin Weigel, owner and the shops only employee for the time being, is renting the spot. With an entrance off the alley, there’s plenty of parking for a driving in and out without hassle, and even enough room to park boats.

“All I do is fish,” Weigel said.

Angry Minnow Live Bait sells basic tackle, used and some new rods and reels along with live bait–the most around. The shop currently has three chest tanks stocked with Minnows, chubs, river mix, bullheads, red darts, red and white spikes and a fridge with night crawlers and wax worms. Weigel has one more tank coming in and some leeches that will be here in time for the fishing opener for Mother’s Day weekend when the Northern and Walleye open up.

The new signage on South Broadway directs customers to Angry Minnow.

“Walleye go crazy for the Red Darter. There’s a lot of good fishing around here. The most popular bait right now is chubs and bullheads,” Weigel said.

The shop has a Facebook Page where they post when they receive live bait, which is usually twice a week, or any upcoming promotions. Currently, with a purchase of four scoops of croppie minnows or fat head minnows the fifth scoop is free, and the shop has free oxygen bags.

Past promotions included giving away demo derby tickets and school supplies. Last year Angry Minnow gave away 35 refurbished fishing rods and reels to kids and families with the New Ulm Area Sport Fishermen helping to distribute them.

“It’s fun when little kids come in. You wouldn’t believe how many kids fish in this town,” Weigel said.

The shop is open 5 am to 7 pm Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday from 6 am to around noon. The shop is closed on Mondays.

Angry Minnow Live Bait on Broadway opened Saturday at their new location behind X-treme Clean Carwash.

“Under Beussmann Bridge is popular, and right here behind the Gislason building in the Cottonwood River. There’s so many Walleyes in the river,” Weigel said.

Darrin Weigel is in business for the love of fishing—he can tell you the best place to fish in town or what bait to use.
