Nicollet apartment developers to tap into existing line
NICOLLET — Adam Huiras, developer, and Mike Drummer, excavator, of the apartment building project at 520 6th Street requested a change to their original plan.
The original plan was to tie into the sewer and water lines under the street which is a county road. Now that they have begun the project, they noticed an existing sewer and water lines leading up to the property used by the school that was previously on the site. Huiras said he would like permission from the city to tie into those existing sewer and water lines.
Huiras explained that using the existing lines would be a cost benefit to them plus it would eliminate breaking open the street for the two apartment buildings. The existing building that is being redeveloped has its own sewer and water lines.
Concern was raised by Mayor Fred Froehlich, the council members, and Joe Duncan of Bolton and Menk about what would happen if the property were ever sold and split into more than one parcel. Each apartment building would then need their own sewer and water lines. Huiras said the intent is to never sell any part of it. It is currently a Planned Unit Development (PUC) with just one parking lot.
Mayor Froehlich advised Huiras that the building inspector would need to let them know what they will need for approval of a new plan for the project.
“We will dig it up and if the existing sewer and water lines work, then we will submit a new plan to the building inspector,” said Huiras.
The council approved using the existing sewer and water lines, but only after check that the lines are up to code and functioning. When checking the lines with a camera, Darin Drill, city Maintenance Supervisor, should also be there along with the building inspector.
Clerk Vanessa Drill requested replacing the old door into the City Office that has caused people to trip. The mayor and council approved installing a new door for $4,450 by Brian Hoffman Construction for the entrance to the city clerk’s office.
Darin Drill, Maintenance Supervisor, said, “I am waiting on quotes for the water tower and lift station repairs. It seems especially hard to find a contractor for the water tower repair.”
Drill also questioned the council about the ash trees in the park. Council Member Phil Radel will check out the trees with Drill to see what needs to be done, possibly treating them or taking them down. Discussion continued and the council decided to create a Tree Committee to evaluate all trees within the city. Radel and Council Member Mary Wels will serve on the committee.
The mayor and council approved the LG220-Nicollet Sons of the American Legion Raffle Event for January 18, 2025. They also approved the September 9 regular council meeting minutes plus the minutes from the September 30 special meeting where they set the preliminary levy and budget for 2025. Also approved were the bills for $89,066.59.
The next meeting of the council will be on Monday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m. The TNT Hearing will be on Monday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m. with the regular meeting to follow at 6:15 p.m.
